Can Boise Dentists Tell if You Have a Hypoactive Thyroid?

Can Boise Dentists Tell if You Have a Hypoactive Thyroid?

Ever wondered why dental records are used to identify a person? Or if teeth are as strong as diamonds? We’ve collected a list of dental myths to set the record straight.

1. Ninety percent of systemic diseases have oral manifestations.

True. This includes diabetes and thyroid problems. So yes, a dentist may be able to tell if you have an underlying health problem just by looking in your mouth.

2. If you’ve lost a permanent tooth, put it in milk.

True. A permanent tooth can only live so long before being returned to your mouth, but putting it in milk can make it live longer. As mentioned in another dental article, be sure not to touch the tooth’s root! And call us right away to schedule an emergency appointment.

3. If you lost or broken a crown, you can fix it with superglue.

False. This is a terrible idea for several reasons: mainly, the crown may have fallen out for a reason (like underlying tooth decay) and should be seen by a dentist as soon as possible. Besides that, superglue isn’t made for your mouth. For a temporary fix before you reach the dentist, try dentist cement from the pharmacy.

4. Teeth are the hardest substance in the human body.

TrueAn article by a Waco dentist explains why: the unique protein found in teeth affects the mineral crystal formation of your teeth, making them much stronger than bone.

5. Teeth are harder than diamonds.

False. While researchers had discovered that tooth enamel is at least as strong as mild steel by the 1960’s, it is clear that a diamond is still stronger.

6. Every person has a unique tongue and tooth print.

True. That is why officials can rely on dental records to prove the identity of a person.
Do you know any more dental trivia? We’d love to hear it!

Boise Dentists: Our Dentists’ Favorite Things about the New Office

Boise Dentists: Our Dentists’ Favorite Things about the New Office
A spacious office with new equipment and a better layout gives us a better environment to do our best work, but it also allows us to work together with our patients to provide the best care and give the best answers. Here are our favorite things about the new office, and how it helps us work better together with our patients:
Spacious rooms:  The new office patients’ rooms are large, comfortable, and quiet. Hardwood floors, natural light, and plenty of extra floor space and seating help patients to sit comfortably during appointments. This allows for more relaxed dentist and patient interaction, which is greatly appreciated on both sides.
Top-of-the-line technology. In addition to spacious rooms, we are very excited to work with the latest dental technology in each patient room. One of the features that is most convenient are the  large format computer displays; these are used to show patients intra-oral camera pictures of what we are seeing, and it really helps us communicate problems we are seeing in the mouth.
Many diseases cannot be seen when we examine the mouth, so these pictures and x-rays help us see small areas of decay between teeth, bone loss caused by infection or gum disease, and many other things, including the position of unerupted teeth. The large format screens allow us to then demonstrate the problems we see in the mouth so that our patients can clearly see the problem, and then we can work together to resolve it.
The Summit team. Finally, by working with such experienced clinicians, we can share ideas on treatment decisions with each other and learn from each other’s experiences. This helps us find the best possible treatment for every patient. Also, working with such a friendly and outgoing staff really helps create an enjoyable environment to work in on a daily basis.
Last but not least, we love being a part of a dental practice with such a long standing of 35 years, and which has an established reputation of being a high-quality and friendly office, with truly great patients. We are excited to carry on the Summit reputation in a new location with the same great service, staff, and patients!

The Chocolate Drawer and Other Favorites: What Our Hygienists and Office Staff Love About Summit

The Chocolate Drawer and Other Favorites: What Our Hygienists and Office Staff Love About Summit
We’ve been wondering what your favorite things about Summit Dental are, so we thought we’d share a few more of ours as well. Here are three of our hygienists’ and office staff’s favorite things about working at Summit Dental Group.

The chocolate drawer. One of our office’s longest traditions, the chocolate drawer is a place for everybody to grab their favorite piece of candy. It is full of any and every kind of chocolate, from Twix to Milky Way to Hersey chocolate bars. We all take turns filling the drawer as well so it always has a good stock, just what we need if we’re having a rough day or need a late afternoon pick-me-up. We can’t quite remember how it started besides the fact that we have an office full of women, so of course chocolate is a great idea!

Office field-trips. These trips are a great time for us to hang out and relax together while creating a solid team environment. They may be as simple as a few rounds of Frisbee golf, or we might make a longer day out of it by floating on the river. One year we even rented a bus and went down to Jackpot to check out the concerts and casinos! Made to bring us together as a team, these fieldtrips include some of our favorite memories of Summit Dental.

The Summit gang. Of course the staff and team at Summit are what make working at this dental office such a great experience. We get along so well together and have such a great work atmosphere. You’ve already heard some of our favorite places to get together for lunch or drinks so you know what a great time we can have! In addition to going out together after work or during lunch, we also like to throw together a girls’ getaway where we go out for dinner or try a new project. Some of our favorite times include going to a ceramics place to paint pottery, or heading to Need to Bead for some creativity.

With something like a chocolate drawer, you have to know that Summit Dental Group is a great place to work with an environment that is hard to beat, whether for us or for you as our patients. Of course, something like a chocolate drawer or office fieldtrip is just the cherry on top of a great working environment, made possible by our amazing team of dentists and staff!

Meet Our Two Local Boise Ceramists!

Meet Our Two Local Boise Ceramists!
Investing in local Boise businesses is one of the many benefits we have as a local dentists. While we can’t wait to talk more about our favorite shops and stores, we thought it was fitting to share more about two local ceramists we work with on a regular basis.

Ralph Langer from Langer Dental Arts and Jack from Treasure Dental Lab take care of our ceramic work for veneers, crowns, and implants. While many dentists outsource their ceramic work to companies overseas, we take pride in keeping this business local! Not only does it allow us to work closely with Ralph and Jack to give our patients the best result, it also allows us to invest in our own community for a stronger local economy.

Quality Material

By using a domestic lab that makes their own crowns and veneers, our Boise dentists know they are getting quality material that is free of toxins or filler material. This knowledge allows our dentists the confidence that they are giving every patient the longest-lasting and healthiest option for a dental crown or bridge. With an overseas or foreign supplier, our dentists cannot be sure of the quality material they are getting.

Tailored results

Not only can our Boise dentists know they are getting pure and high-quality material, they also know that their patients are receiving the most customized results. Because we use local Boise ceramists, we can send a patient to their office for an in-person assessment. This allows Ralph or Jack to see exactly the color and contour the dental crown or porcelain veneer should have. While they usually do such a great job the first time that there is no need for a second appointment, their nearby office allows us to send a dental crown or veneer back to them if it needs a little more tweaking. This would be impossible with an overseas supplier! The final result is a unique and completely customized veneer or crown that will look identical to the patient’s other teeth.

A stronger community.

Finally, by using a local Boise office for our ceramic work, we are supporting and encouraging our local economy. We love our Boise community and want to help it thrive. Using a local ceramist is just one way of doing that. These local labs have such great craftsmanship they deserve to be the first pick for our office’s business!

We know what a great job they do at Langer Dental Arts and Treasure Dental Lab, but we would love to hear about your first-hand experience. Leave a comment here, or stop by our Facebook page to let us know how much you appreciate these great businesses as well!
