How do you feel about your smile? If you’ve ever wanted to correct any issues with a best smile restoration, now is the time to visit your downtown Boise dentist. A warm, confident smile is a powerful indicator of a person’s overall health and attention to detail. Good oral hygiene and cosmetic dentistry can change the way you look and feel. At Summit Dental Group, our dentists can provide you with the healthy, younger looking smile you’ve always wanted.
Good Oral Hygiene
One of the simplest things you can do is to practice good oral hygiene. That’s why it’s important to brush and floss your teeth at least twice a day and visit your downtown Boise dentist regularly. Doing so will promote healthy teeth and gums while keeping your smile looking and feeling clean. By ignoring these simple habits, we put our smiles at risk which can lead to unsightly, even painful problems such as:
- Tooth discoloration
- Tooth Loss
- Periodontal disease
Even when you take good care of your teeth, there may be existing issues you’d like to correct. At Summit Dental, we offer a wide variety of cosmetic treatment options to enhance the appearance of your smile.
Yellow, Stained Teeth
Certain foods, medications, smoking or neglecting your teeth can cause embarrassing tooth discoloration. At Summit Dental, we use a wide variety of treatment options to correct and brighten your smile.
- One hour, in office “laser” whitening – This procedure is ideal for patients who want fast results and are not interested in at-home treatments.
- At-home tray whitening – This procedure involves a patient wearing a custom dental tray for approximately 30 minutes per day, while at home until desired results occur.
- Crest Professional White Strips – These white strips are 4 times stronger and faster than the store bought brand Crest White Strips.
Chips or Misshapen Teeth
Chipped or misshapen teeth can be corrected by dental contouring or by the application of veneers or crowns.
- Dental Contouring – A dental technique that removes small amounts of tooth enamel in order to change the shape, length, or surface of one or more teeth.
- Veneers – Custom designed by your Boise dentist, veneers are small shells of porcelain that are bonded to the surface of your teeth.
- Crowns – If a tooth is cracked or damaged a crown can be used to cap or completely cover a tooth. Crows can be made to match the color of a patient’s tooth, providing them with a natural look while restoring the normal function of the tooth.
If you have one or more missing teeth, Boise dental implants are a superior option compared to traditional treatments such as bridges or partial dentures. Implants are permanently placed in the jaw and do not require any special cleaning procedures besides normal brushing and flossing. They are similar in form and function to natural teeth and can replace one or more damaged or missing teeth.

You know you want to get your teeth whitened, and you’ve heard plenty of things that you should and shouldn’t do with the process. Here are four things you should keep in mind:

1. Do research and ask your dentist in Boise which whitening methods work the best for you.
While you should do your own research, you can also get valuable information by talking with your dentist. Boise dentists at our Summit Dental Office offer three methods of Boise teeth whitening: extra-strength whitening strips, an in-office teeth whitening Boise treatment, and customized whitening trays. The teeth whitening trays offer a great mix of affordability and customized work and is our most popular choice.
2. Don’t wait until the last minute to get teeth whitening in Boise.
Unless you choose an in-office treatment with a Boise dentist, you’ll need at least a few weeks to get to your teeth to the desired whiteness. Give yourself a month with the extra-strength Boise teeth whitening strips or customized trays.
3. Do become extra vigilant with daily dental hygiene.
By brushing your teeth and flossing twice a day, you can keep your teeth the beautiful white you want them to be long after your teeth whitening Boise treatment. You can further keep them white by rinsing your mouth or brushing after eating or drinking anything extra sugary.
4. Don’t drink staining liquids during or right after your Boise teeth whitening treatment.
If you want to see results quickly and want them to last, avoid drinking tea, coffee, soda, and other dark liquids that are more likely to stain teeth. A patient’s teeth are especially vulnerable to staining right after a teeth whitening Boise treatment, so it is especially important to avoid these substances during and soon after the bleaching process, no matter which method you choose. The same goes for smoking or chewing tobacco—it yellows your teeth, so limit use, rinse after using, or (best of all) cut it out completely.
What have you learned from getting your teeth whitened? Let us know!
Ever wondered why you really need to get a dental crown? Aside from replacing a lost tooth with a dental implant, there are at least four signs that you need a dental crown:

1. You Are Getting a Root Canal
A root canal means that infection has found its way to the nerve of a tooth, killing the tooth and causing an infection at its root. At our office a dentist, Boise trained and based, will drain the tooth and fill the root to seal it off, but we usually recommend a crown to finish the treatment. After a root canal, the tooth is dead and is therefore more brittle and easier to break. If the tooth has already had a few cavities (and most teeth that require root canals have), it will be even more susceptible to breaking. A crown will give it an extra seal of protection and added strength.
2. Our Boise Dentists Found a Deep Crack in the Tooth
As you’ll hear from our own dentist, Boise patients with a cracked tooth do not always need a dental crown. However, if you do have a cracked tooth, you need to see one of our Boise dentists as soon as possible to see how bad of a crack it is. Our dentists will make sure that the crack is confined and does not reach the nerve and kill the tooth. Deeper cracks require a crown to protect the tooth and to keep the tooth and its root strong.
3. Your Tooth Has Chipped
If your tooth has chipped in the simple course of everyday (that is, without any injury or trauma causing it to chip), it is a good sign that you need a tooth crown. Boise dentists will tell you that strong and healthy teeth don’t chip. Fragile, crumbling teeth do. If your tooth is starting to fall apart just due to everyday use, our Boise dentists will add a crown to protect as much of the tooth as possible and to keep the root of the tooth strong and healthy. Left alone, the tooth can continue to crumble, get infected, and be lost entirely.
4. A Dentist, Boise Trained, Has Found Too Many Cavities on One Tooth
The more cavities you have on a tooth, the more its strength is compromised. This can come from several medium sized cavities or just one very large one—if a single cavity covers more than half the width of a tooth, a filling won’t do. You’ll need a dental crown.

Christmas and New Year’s usually means plenty of family time, parties, and pictures. Want your teeth to be white and sparkly for the holidays? Here are our tips!
Start Teeth Whitening in Boise Today
We’ve mentioned before that there are three types of teeth whitening. Two of those types are home kits—professional-strength Crest Whitening Strips, and customized whitening trays. The customized trays are our most popular method of whitening because they are affordable and offer quick and impressive results. The results are gradual enough to make the process look natural and to let you decide how white you want your teeth to be. They also allow you to touch up your smile every few months so you can always have a bright smile.
For this at-home teeth whitening, Boise dentists recommend allowing three to four weeks to get to your desired level of brightness. That means you need to start the whitening process this week to be finished by Christmas! You can speed up the process by using the trays or strips once or even twice a day.
Be Vigilant with Brushing and Flossing
Keeping teeth clean is the best thing you can do to keep them white—you can help get a whiter smile by simply brushing and flossing three times a day. Remember that doing a great job brushing your teeth doesn’t mean brushing really hard (which can damage gums and tooth enamel) but brushing for a longer period of time (usually about two minutes).
Getting a new toothbrush can help you keep the best dental care and hygiene as well. A sonic toothbrush will clean your teeth extraordinarily well and can be even more valuable if you are brushing around dental work like braces or a permanent retainer. Some electric or sonic toothbrushes will even time themselves so that you know you are brushing for a good two minutes.
Stay Away from Dark Foods
No matter what type of teeth whitening, Boise dentists highly recommend staying away from coffee, tea, soda, and other dark, staining foods that can diminish your teeth whitening results. This is especially true for the day after a one-appointment teeth whitening, but it still holds true for the at-home kits or any time you want your teeth especially white and pretty. If you can’t go without your morning coffee or afternoon Diet Coke, you can lessen its impact by diluting the color with milk in coffee and by rinsing with water immediately after drinking.
Whatever type of teeth whitening you decide on, these tips will help you get your teeth sparkling for pictures by Christmas.

Investing in local Boise businesses is one of the many benefits we have as a local dentists. While we can’t wait to talk more about our favorite shops and stores, we thought it was fitting to share more about two local ceramists we work with on a regular basis.
Ralph Langer from Langer Dental Arts and Jack from Treasure Dental Lab take care of our ceramic work for veneers, crowns, and implants. While many dentists outsource their ceramic work to companies overseas, we take pride in keeping this business local! Not only does it allow us to work closely with Ralph and Jack to give our patients the best result, it also allows us to invest in our own community for a stronger local economy.
By using a domestic lab that makes their own crowns and veneers, our Boise dentists know they are getting quality material that is free of toxins or filler material. This knowledge allows our dentists the confidence that they are giving every patient the longest-lasting and healthiest option for a dental crown or bridge. With an overseas or foreign supplier, our dentists cannot be sure of the quality material they are getting.
Not only can our Boise dentists know they are getting pure and high-quality material, they also know that their patients are receiving the most customized results. Because we use local Boise ceramists, we can send a patient to their office for an in-person assessment. This allows Ralph or Jack to see exactly the color and contour the dental crown or porcelain veneer should have. While they usually do such a great job the first time that there is no need for a second appointment, their nearby office allows us to send a dental crown or veneer back to them if it needs a little more tweaking. This would be impossible with an overseas supplier! The final result is a unique and completely customized veneer or crown that will look identical to the patient’s other teeth.
A stronger community.
Finally, by using a local Boise office for our ceramic work, we are supporting and encouraging our local economy. We love our Boise community and want to help it thrive. Using a local ceramist is just one way of doing that. These local labs have such great craftsmanship they deserve to be the first pick for our office’s business!
We know what a great job they do at Langer Dental Arts and Treasure Dental Lab, but we would love to hear about your first-hand experience. Leave a comment here, or stop by our Facebook page to let us know how much you appreciate these great businesses as well!
We do more than just give you a porcelain dental crown and veneers. We do a thorough job of discovering what you want and what will look and work best with your smile. From our ceramists to our hygienists we aim to make you feel comfortable and to give you your best smile. Wondering how we do it? Here is a typical appointment schedule for getting crowns or veneers:
Initial Cosmetic Dentistry appointment.
If you are considering cosmetic dental work such as a dental crown or veneers, we will do some information gathering during the initial appointment. Our Boise dentists will take impressions of your teeth to send to the lab, where they will do a “mock up” in wax so we can show you what to expect as far as the shape and contour of your teeth. This will ensure that we are both happy with the direction of the case before we start. During this appointment we also examine your facial profile and lip line as well as the smile at rest and full smile. We generally take a few pictures for before-and-after comparison.
Second Cosmetic Dentistry appointment.
The next appointment is the actual preparation of your teeth to receive the crown or veneer. Thanks to the cutting edge ceramic materials we use these days, the changes we make for both crowns and veneers are minimal. You also don’t need to worry about how your smile will look between this appointment and the placement of the permanent dental crown or veneers because we will give you provisional or “temporary” crowns or veneers.
At the end of this appointment we take an impression of your teeth to send to Ralph or Jack, our two favorite ceramists who both operate in Boise and the Treasure Valley area. They will create the dental crown or veneers according to the contours and shape we had in the original mock up. They will know the shade to make the veneers and crowns by looking at the picture we provide, or by having you go meet them personally for a custom shade appointment.
Why do we use a local lab? It gives us the option to send you over to their lab for a personal look at your teeth so Ralph and Jack can do their best job in matching the shade, color, shape, and natural anatomy of your teeth. Every person has subtle characteristics that give them their unique smile, so these are best matched in person with a highly experienced and talented ceramist. Secondly, because we are able to work so closely with Ralph and Jack we can get the highest quality, something that would be more difficult to achieve if we used an overseas company. Finally, using a local lab means we are keeping the business here locally, supporting the local Boise economy.
Third Cosmetic Dentistry Appointment.
This is the appointment where we try-in the permanent veneers or crowns to make sure both of us are completely satisfied with the result in all aspects. If any minor changes are needed either in color, shape or contour, our Boise dentists will accomplish this prior to cementing the final veneers or crowns. We have you evaluate your new smile in the mirror, and on some occasions we have a spouse or a friend view them as well to make sure you are completely happy with your new teeth. If you are, we proceed to cementing the veneer or crown on permanently with a specialized cement designed to bond to both the natural tooth structure and ceramic material. We also like to take some photographs of the final result of your beautiful smile!
We do our best to accomplish most of the work on the front end of this process to ensure you are happy with the final product and have a long lasting and high quality veneer or crown. After the dental crown or veneers are in place, you can help maintain the quality and health of these and your other teeth by following the same protocol as you would with your natural teeth: brushing twice a day, regularly flossing and keeping regular hygiene appointments. These regular check-ups help maintain the integrity of the restorations, as well as help catch any potential issues as soon as possible.
We love giving you the smile restoration you want through our thorough and personal cosmetic dental work process. Have more questions on the process? Stop by our Boise dental office or leave a comment below!
Worried about your first cosmetic dental appointment? Put your fears aside with this quick overview of your appointment at our Boise dental office. Your first appointment generally has three parts: expectations, evaluation, and consultation.
You can help us give you the best care by preparing for your appointment before you even arrive at our Boise dentist office. One of the first things we want to know when you head into your appointment is what expectations you have, so come to our office prepared to let us know what you are looking for and what concerns you have. Consider if you looking to fix a distinct problem, or if you want some general ideas on how to improve your whole smile.
If you want any changes completed by a certain date, now is the time to tell us (for example, many people come in for changes before an important day like graduation or their wedding). We will do our best to accommodate you!
If you are a new patient, we will give you a comprehensive new patient exam. This will help us understand if there are any underlying problems we need to address before deciding on a cosmetic procedure.
During a comprehensive exam, we will check for oral cancer, cavities, and evidence of periodontal disease or teeth grinding or clenching. We will also take x-rays to look for tooth decay, bone loss, and other major problems. Our goal is to give you a healthy and functional smile in addition to a beautiful smile. By addressing all the issues you have, not just cosmetic issues, we can save you time, money, and discomfort.
Once we fully understand what you want and what needs to be done, we will discuss the various options you have for a smile restoration or other procedure. Some of the procedures we may discuss include teeth whitening, ceramic crowns and porcelain veneers. If you need some teeth to be replaced, we can discuss the difference between a dental implant and a bridge. If you are looking for a full smile restoration, we will probably recommend a blend of these procedures, covering some teeth with veneers or crowns while whitening others and possibly replacing missing or severely damaged teeth.
In addition to giving you the smile you are looking for, we will also mention any other problems you may want to address. This could include getting a mouth guard to prevent further damage to your teeth from grinding or clenching, or it could mean starting some periodontal treatments for periodontitis.
We want to make every patient in the Treasure Valley area feel comfortable and confident during their appointments in our Boise dentist office. We hope that this overview helped give you a better idea of what to expect when you walk through our doors.

Restoring a smile depends heavily on what you want or need. Do you have missing teeth? Decayed or chipped teeth? Do you simply want whiter teeth? All these factors play into what kind of procedures the Boise dentists at Summit Dental will use.
Veneers and Crowns
The most common procedures for smile restorations are porcelain veneers and crowns. While made of the same material and resulting in the same effect (white, smooth teeth), veneers and crowns each have their own uses. Veneers are thin layers of porcelain that can change the shade and shaping of a tooth that is discolored or chipped, in addition to smoothing out spacing issues such as crowded teeth or excess spacing. They work well when replacing old fillings and are best used on teeth that have a sound structure. If your teeth are structurally sound or the veneers are strictly for cosmetic purposes, veneers could be your best option.
If your teeth are significantly worn down or need more protection, you may need to consider a porcelain crown instead. A crown is a covering for a tooth that improves strength as well as appearance. They can restore a broken or worn down tooth, mask flaws in color and shape, and strengthen a tooth that was composed of more filling than tooth structure. Crowns are a good fit for teeth that are significantly decayed or that don’t have as much healthy teeth structure.
Implants and Bridges
Need a smile restoration for missing teeth? Implants and bridges are reliable replacements for missing teeth that will give you what feels and looks like a real tooth. When you have lost a tooth, replacing it with an implant can prevent jawbone deterioration and further tooth loss in addition to giving you a great smile. The post placed in your jawbone acts as the tooth’s root, keeping the jawbone strong. The crown attached to this post keeps the surrounding teeth in the right place, gives you a strong tooth for eating and chewing, and completes your smile with a tooth that is identical in shape and color with your other teeth. If you already have an implant but want an even further restored smile, replacing this crown in addition to adding porcelain veneers or crowns to your other teeth is an excellent way to get your ideal smile.
Each of your teeth may be unique; some may be worn down, others simply discolored, and so on. For the best smile restoration, our Boise dentists can use a combination of veneers, crowns, and implants to give you your most winning smile. In addition, while some of your teeth may need a porcelain veneer or crown, some may only require a little teeth whitening. Check out our previous blog on teeth whitening for more information on these procedures.

Ever wondered what exactly “cosmetic dentistry” means? You may be surprised to find out that it means more than teeth whitening. Not only does cosmetic dentistry improve the appearance of a person’s teeth, it can also correct functional problems with your bite or teeth structure. It covers a wide range of procedures that can eliminate problems with chips, cracks, cavities, and missing teeth. Three common procedures that you can find at Summit Dental in Boise include smile restorations, dental implants, and composite fillings.
Smile makeovers and restorations can include a wide variety of procedures. The dentist will look at your smile and suggest the procedures that will give you the best result. This can include teeth whitening in addition to porcelain veneers and crowns. Teeth whitening can either be done in the office in a single appointment or at home with a customized whitening kit. Porcelain veneers are laid on the surface of teeth to eliminate chips, cracks, or discoloration. Porcelain crowns offer similar results while covering the entire tooth.
Implants are used to replace missing teeth. They generally involve the post, which is attached to the jawbone, and the crown, which is attached to the post so that the patient has a new permanent “tooth” in both appearance and functionality. With color matching, the porcelain crowns for implants and smile makeovers can match your own teeth so exactly that they naturally blend into your smile for a unified look.
Colored, no-metal fillings are an excellent replacement for worn-out or decayed metal fillings. Not only do they match the color of your teeth, they will also stay more resistant to staining and discoloration. When you have a cavity or other problem on a visible part of your smile, composite fillings give you the protection you need while maintaining a great smile. Composite fillings are also a great alternative to other fillings due to their strength.
Think you might need a smile makeover, or have questions about composite fillings or implants? We would love to hear from you! Give us a call or stop by our Boise office.
