YES! Boise dental X-rays have been safely used in dentistry for well over a century. In fact, X-rays help your Boise dentist visualize problems and diseases of the teeth and surrounding tissue that cannot be seen with a simple Boise dental exam. They are also helpful in assisting in the preparation of other Boise cosmetic dentistry, best smile restoration procedures that can include: Boise tooth implants, braces, dentures, etc.
Today the amount of radiation you are exposed to has significantly decreased as technology has advanced. Of course there are always risks when it comes to any diagnostic procedure, but the benefits of Boise dental X-rays far outweigh those risks. In fact, Boise dental X-ray tools and techniques such as lead aprons, and focalized cones are specifically designed to limit the amount of radiation you are exposed to, and every precaution is made to ensure that radiation exposure is As Low As Reasonably Achievable (the ALARA principle).
Radiation exposure comes from a variety of environmental factors in addition to any healthcare diagnostic or treatment tools. To better understand this perspective, a person during a one year time span, is expected to have 360mRem from the sun, air, etc. By comparison, a single set of bitewing X-rays is 0.3mREM. Keep in mind though, radiation does accumulate in our bodies over a lifetime, and additional exposure should be avoided whenever possible.
Boise dental X-rays can be used to:
- Provide your Boise dentist with the ability to see areas of decay that may not be visible during an oral exam, especially small areas of decay between teeth.
- Identify decay occurring beneath an existing filling.
- Reveal bone loss or changes that accompany gum disease.
- Changes in a Boise root canal resulting from infection.
- Assist in the preparation of a best smile restoration such as: Boise tooth implants, braces, dentures, or other Boise cosmetic dentistry procedures
- Reveal an abscess (an infection at the root of a tooth or between the gum and a tooth)
- Reveal other developmental abnormalities, such as cysts and some types of tumors
Just because someone’s famous doesn’t mean they’re immune to seeking out proper dental care. In fact, at some point during their lives they had their now pearly whites either fixed or enhanced by means of cosmetic dentistry. Below are some good examples of celebs we love that would have looked quite differently today if they hadn’t sought out a best smile restoration:
1. Tom Cruise – Who can forget this young hunk from the wrong side of the tracks in “The Outsiders”? While his part as Steve Randle definitely helped jump start his movie-making career, his teeth at the time didn’t live up to movie star standards. Actually, it wasn’t until his “Mission Impossible” days that he upgraded to a full set of veneers. While our Boise dentist would like to take credit for his transformation, it was probably Nicole Kidman who finally convinced him to seek out his best smile restoration.
2. Jim Carrey – Who can forget the infamous Lloyd Christmas from our favorite “Dumb & Dumber” movie? This rubber-faced comedian famously sported a chipped front tooth which he later revealed was real. In fact, he chipped his tooth while in detention during his youth in grammar school and was sent home with the broken tooth in an envelope. For his role as Lloyd Christmas he later removed the cap in order to make his character even funnier.
3. Victoria Beckham – Once upon a time, “Posh Spice” from the “Spice Girls” had what some people might call as the “British Snaggle”. In fact, her teeth look a whole lot different now than they did at the beginning of her pop singing career. Her best smile restoration probably included what our Boise dentist would recommend as a little cosmetic dentistry.
4. Ed Helms – In the 2009 smash hit comedy, “The Hangover” Helm’s tiger stealing character “Stu” loses a tooth after taking a punch from Mike Tyson. In reality Helms actually pulled out what our Boise dentist would say was a dental implant by having the crown broken off and post unscrewed from the implant!
Remember, while you’re probably happy to hear that celebrities are in reality people like you and me, you too can have an Oscar-winning smile by simply brushing, flossing, and regularly visiting your Boise dentist. Broken or damaged teeth? Our Boise dentist has you covered. Make an appointment today to discuss your best smile restoration!
Minor Problems Turn into Costly Repairs
As a car owner, you probably already know how much a hassle it can be to keep it maintained. You also probably know how important it is to maintain your car so you don’t get stranded on the side of the road. In addition, minor problems that cost little money to fix can turn into expensive problems if left ignored.
The same goes for your teeth. We all want a perfect smile right? We also want a healthy smile. By taking care of your teeth & practicing proper oral hygiene small imperfections or dental problems can be easily fixed by scheduling a regular Boise dental exam.
Maintenance Requires Tune-ups & Boise Dental Exams!
We all know that routine maintenance like changing your oil, refilling your fluids and rotating your tires are an important part of extending the life of your automobile. Your teeth are just as important! Care for your teeth by scheduling a regular Boise dental exam!
Got a cracked or broken tooth? Consider scheduling a best smile restoration exam. Your Boise dentist will then be able to help you decide what kind of treatment would work best for you and your budget. From Boise crowns and bridges to other Boise cosmetic dentistry options, Summit Dental can help you fix minor problems before they turn into big ones!
Like cars, teeth require a bit of upkeep. It’s easy but requires some effort. While teeth are durable, little problems often turn into big ones when they are ignored. Taking proper care of them can make them last a whole lot longer. While there are a variety of Boise dental options to repair your teeth like Boise tooth implants, and Boise crowns and bridges, keep in mind that unlike your car, you can’t trade your natural teeth in for new ones. You only get one set of organic teeth. Take care of them, and they’ll take care of you!

How White is Too White?
We see it every day. From movies to magazines, Hollywood conveys smiles whiter than snow. But how white is too white?
A Good Rule of Thumb
According to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry , teeth whitening is the No. 1 requested cosmetic service today. The problem, though, is that many people are taking it too far. Over whitening can cause loss of enamel or translucent and unnatural looking teeth. If taken to the extreme, teeth can lose their healthy sheen. A good rule of thumb is that the color of your teeth should match the whites of your eyes .
What Causes Discoloration?
There are many causes for tooth discoloration. As we age our teeth often become naturally darker, yellow or stained. Some main causes of internal and external tooth discoloration are due to genetics, tooth decay, trauma, antibiotics and certain foods.
Get Teeth Whitening Advice from a Boise Dentist
For your best smile restoration, it’s important to consult with your Boise dentist about your preferred whitening method as they are best qualified to handle any issues that may arise from your whitening treatment. With a Boise teeth cleaning, many external stains can be removed while promoting good oral health. During this process your Boise dentist can go over your expectations while guiding you on what is appropriate concerning your overall Boise dental care plan.
Likewise, tooth whitening may not enhance your smile if you’ve had bonding or tooth-colored fillings placed in your front teeth. The whitener will not affect the color of these materials, and they will not match your newly whitened smile. In these cases, you may want to investigate other Boise cosmetic dentistry options, such as porcelain veneers or dental bonding on other teeth.

It’s time to talk about Boise cosmetic dentistry! It’s been a while since we talked about the different aspects of the best smile restoration, so in the next few weeks we will cover everything from the proper shades of teeth whitening to using the highest quality materials for Boise crowns and bridges.
Remember that a smile restoration can include everything from Boise tooth implants to teeth whitening. These are the ways we stay at the top of our field no matter what your smile needs:
Fast Boise Crowns and Bridges with High-Quality Materials
Our Boise dentists have always used the top materials that will blend the most naturally with your teeth and give you the long lifespan you want with Boise tooth implants, crowns, or a dental bridge. Boise is home to several phenomenal local ceramists (not to mention our in-office CEREC machine), and we treasure their expertise for our porcelain veneers and other materials. Porcelain is the preferred material because it is strong while giving us the ability to perfectly match the color of your other teeth.
Expertly-Advised and Orchestrated Teeth Whitening
Boise smile restorations usually begin with teeth whitening. For example, Dr. Robert Studebaker will whiten your teeth sooner rather than later so that he can match the color of your newly whitened teeth to the porcelain Boise tooth implants or crowns that you are also getting. For a quick and easy approach to our Boise dentists’ teeth whitening, you can schedule an hour-long appointment where you walk out with your teeth just as white as you want them. Dr. Robert Studebaker will help you decide how many shades lighter you should go to keep the look natural.
A Focus on Overall Perfection
At the end of the day, if you aren’t happy, then neither are we. We are careful to bring you into every part of the process—from a Boise dentist’s teeth whitening decisions to the final carefully-placed veneer—to make sure you are happy with the direction we are going. And when it is all said and done, we give you a mirror to make sure you like your smile.
We’re proud to say that we can give you the best smile restoration. Such dedicated work in Boise cosmetic dentistry is only possible because of the amazing team of experts that we have on staff and work with daily. Thank you for trusting us with your beautiful smile!
You know you want to get your teeth whitened, and you’ve heard plenty of things that you should and shouldn’t do with the process. Here are four things you should keep in mind:

1. Do research and ask your dentist in Boise which whitening methods work the best for you.
While you should do your own research, you can also get valuable information by talking with your dentist. Boise dentists at our Summit Dental Office offer three methods of Boise teeth whitening: extra-strength whitening strips, an in-office teeth whitening Boise treatment, and customized whitening trays. The teeth whitening trays offer a great mix of affordability and customized work and is our most popular choice.
2. Don’t wait until the last minute to get teeth whitening in Boise.
Unless you choose an in-office treatment with a Boise dentist, you’ll need at least a few weeks to get to your teeth to the desired whiteness. Give yourself a month with the extra-strength Boise teeth whitening strips or customized trays.
3. Do become extra vigilant with daily dental hygiene.
By brushing your teeth and flossing twice a day, you can keep your teeth the beautiful white you want them to be long after your teeth whitening Boise treatment. You can further keep them white by rinsing your mouth or brushing after eating or drinking anything extra sugary.
4. Don’t drink staining liquids during or right after your Boise teeth whitening treatment.
If you want to see results quickly and want them to last, avoid drinking tea, coffee, soda, and other dark liquids that are more likely to stain teeth. A patient’s teeth are especially vulnerable to staining right after a teeth whitening Boise treatment, so it is especially important to avoid these substances during and soon after the bleaching process, no matter which method you choose. The same goes for smoking or chewing tobacco—it yellows your teeth, so limit use, rinse after using, or (best of all) cut it out completely.
What have you learned from getting your teeth whitened? Let us know!
Christmas and New Year’s usually means plenty of family time, parties, and pictures. Want your teeth to be white and sparkly for the holidays? Here are our tips!
Start Teeth Whitening in Boise Today
We’ve mentioned before that there are three types of teeth whitening. Two of those types are home kits—professional-strength Crest Whitening Strips, and customized whitening trays. The customized trays are our most popular method of whitening because they are affordable and offer quick and impressive results. The results are gradual enough to make the process look natural and to let you decide how white you want your teeth to be. They also allow you to touch up your smile every few months so you can always have a bright smile.
For this at-home teeth whitening, Boise dentists recommend allowing three to four weeks to get to your desired level of brightness. That means you need to start the whitening process this week to be finished by Christmas! You can speed up the process by using the trays or strips once or even twice a day.
Be Vigilant with Brushing and Flossing
Keeping teeth clean is the best thing you can do to keep them white—you can help get a whiter smile by simply brushing and flossing three times a day. Remember that doing a great job brushing your teeth doesn’t mean brushing really hard (which can damage gums and tooth enamel) but brushing for a longer period of time (usually about two minutes).
Getting a new toothbrush can help you keep the best dental care and hygiene as well. A sonic toothbrush will clean your teeth extraordinarily well and can be even more valuable if you are brushing around dental work like braces or a permanent retainer. Some electric or sonic toothbrushes will even time themselves so that you know you are brushing for a good two minutes.
Stay Away from Dark Foods
No matter what type of teeth whitening, Boise dentists highly recommend staying away from coffee, tea, soda, and other dark, staining foods that can diminish your teeth whitening results. This is especially true for the day after a one-appointment teeth whitening, but it still holds true for the at-home kits or any time you want your teeth especially white and pretty. If you can’t go without your morning coffee or afternoon Diet Coke, you can lessen its impact by diluting the color with milk in coffee and by rinsing with water immediately after drinking.
Whatever type of teeth whitening you decide on, these tips will help you get your teeth sparkling for pictures by Christmas.

Investing in local Boise businesses is one of the many benefits we have as a local dentists. While we can’t wait to talk more about our favorite shops and stores, we thought it was fitting to share more about two local ceramists we work with on a regular basis.
Ralph Langer from Langer Dental Arts and Jack from Treasure Dental Lab take care of our ceramic work for veneers, crowns, and implants. While many dentists outsource their ceramic work to companies overseas, we take pride in keeping this business local! Not only does it allow us to work closely with Ralph and Jack to give our patients the best result, it also allows us to invest in our own community for a stronger local economy.
By using a domestic lab that makes their own crowns and veneers, our Boise dentists know they are getting quality material that is free of toxins or filler material. This knowledge allows our dentists the confidence that they are giving every patient the longest-lasting and healthiest option for a dental crown or bridge. With an overseas or foreign supplier, our dentists cannot be sure of the quality material they are getting.
Not only can our Boise dentists know they are getting pure and high-quality material, they also know that their patients are receiving the most customized results. Because we use local Boise ceramists, we can send a patient to their office for an in-person assessment. This allows Ralph or Jack to see exactly the color and contour the dental crown or porcelain veneer should have. While they usually do such a great job the first time that there is no need for a second appointment, their nearby office allows us to send a dental crown or veneer back to them if it needs a little more tweaking. This would be impossible with an overseas supplier! The final result is a unique and completely customized veneer or crown that will look identical to the patient’s other teeth.
A stronger community.
Finally, by using a local Boise office for our ceramic work, we are supporting and encouraging our local economy. We love our Boise community and want to help it thrive. Using a local ceramist is just one way of doing that. These local labs have such great craftsmanship they deserve to be the first pick for our office’s business!
We know what a great job they do at Langer Dental Arts and Treasure Dental Lab, but we would love to hear about your first-hand experience. Leave a comment here, or stop by our Facebook page to let us know how much you appreciate these great businesses as well!
We do more than just give you a porcelain dental crown and veneers. We do a thorough job of discovering what you want and what will look and work best with your smile. From our ceramists to our hygienists we aim to make you feel comfortable and to give you your best smile. Wondering how we do it? Here is a typical appointment schedule for getting crowns or veneers:
Initial Cosmetic Dentistry appointment.
If you are considering cosmetic dental work such as a dental crown or veneers, we will do some information gathering during the initial appointment. Our Boise dentists will take impressions of your teeth to send to the lab, where they will do a “mock up” in wax so we can show you what to expect as far as the shape and contour of your teeth. This will ensure that we are both happy with the direction of the case before we start. During this appointment we also examine your facial profile and lip line as well as the smile at rest and full smile. We generally take a few pictures for before-and-after comparison.
Second Cosmetic Dentistry appointment.
The next appointment is the actual preparation of your teeth to receive the crown or veneer. Thanks to the cutting edge ceramic materials we use these days, the changes we make for both crowns and veneers are minimal. You also don’t need to worry about how your smile will look between this appointment and the placement of the permanent dental crown or veneers because we will give you provisional or “temporary” crowns or veneers.
At the end of this appointment we take an impression of your teeth to send to Ralph or Jack, our two favorite ceramists who both operate in Boise and the Treasure Valley area. They will create the dental crown or veneers according to the contours and shape we had in the original mock up. They will know the shade to make the veneers and crowns by looking at the picture we provide, or by having you go meet them personally for a custom shade appointment.
Why do we use a local lab? It gives us the option to send you over to their lab for a personal look at your teeth so Ralph and Jack can do their best job in matching the shade, color, shape, and natural anatomy of your teeth. Every person has subtle characteristics that give them their unique smile, so these are best matched in person with a highly experienced and talented ceramist. Secondly, because we are able to work so closely with Ralph and Jack we can get the highest quality, something that would be more difficult to achieve if we used an overseas company. Finally, using a local lab means we are keeping the business here locally, supporting the local Boise economy.
Third Cosmetic Dentistry Appointment.
This is the appointment where we try-in the permanent veneers or crowns to make sure both of us are completely satisfied with the result in all aspects. If any minor changes are needed either in color, shape or contour, our Boise dentists will accomplish this prior to cementing the final veneers or crowns. We have you evaluate your new smile in the mirror, and on some occasions we have a spouse or a friend view them as well to make sure you are completely happy with your new teeth. If you are, we proceed to cementing the veneer or crown on permanently with a specialized cement designed to bond to both the natural tooth structure and ceramic material. We also like to take some photographs of the final result of your beautiful smile!
We do our best to accomplish most of the work on the front end of this process to ensure you are happy with the final product and have a long lasting and high quality veneer or crown. After the dental crown or veneers are in place, you can help maintain the quality and health of these and your other teeth by following the same protocol as you would with your natural teeth: brushing twice a day, regularly flossing and keeping regular hygiene appointments. These regular check-ups help maintain the integrity of the restorations, as well as help catch any potential issues as soon as possible.
We love giving you the smile restoration you want through our thorough and personal cosmetic dental work process. Have more questions on the process? Stop by our Boise dental office or leave a comment below!
