A healthy, beautiful smile is among one of the most attractive features you can have. Not only does a beautiful smile denote healthy teeth and gums, it also plays an important role when it comes to your self-confidence. However, if you are embarrassed about your smile due to stained teeth, you probably don’t tend to share your smile that often. This holiday season, give yourself the gift of a Boise teeth whitening treatment. Boise teeth whitening is one of the most popular, asked-for, cosmetic dentistry procedures today. Why? Think about it. Your smile is one of the first things people see. Not only does a bright smile boost self-confidence, it commands the attention of everyone you meet. Unfortunately though, many people often find themselves hiding their smiles due to yellowed or stained teeth. At Summit Dental we offer a variety of teeth whitening Boise options that will help to eliminate stubborn & embarrassing stains while enhancing the overall look of your smile.
When considering a professional Boise teeth whitening treatment, it’s important to understand what causes your teeth to become discolored. While it seems like teeth are smooth and hard like porcelain, tooth enamel is actually composed of microscopic pores that gradually become stained over time as we age. Over the years tooth enamel is eventually worn down, becoming more and more transparent, allowing the color of dentin – the core material of your tooth – to show through.
While discoloration is a natural sign of aging, there are other common teeth staining causes:
- Food & drinks – Red wine, coffee, tea, cola, berries, pasta sauces, vinegars, etc., can all contribute to enamel erosion and cause considerable staining over time
- Smoking – Nicotine from cigarettes & chewing tobacco leaves behind brown residue that slowly soaks into the tooth enamel causing discoloration.
- Medications & Mouthrinses – Antihistamines like Benadryl, and mouthwashes that contain chlorhexidine and cetylpyridinium chloride can stain teeth.
- Poor Dental Hygiene – Inadequate brushing, flossing, and rinsing can lead to an overabundance of plaque and stain-causing residues.
Discoloration comes in two forms: extrinsic and intrinsic. Extrinsic stains are surface level stains left over from what you eat and drink. Brushing your teeth at home with an over-the-counter whitening toothpaste helps to remove normal extrinsic stains acquired throughout the day. Intrinsic stains on the other hand are located below the enamel and are caused by years of stain exposure.
Boise Teeth Whitening Options
At Summit Dental, we recommend having your teeth cleaned by one of our dental hygienists twice a year in order to remove built up tartar and plaque. A professional Boise teeth cleaning also includes tooth scaling and tooth polishing. During your teeth cleaning appointment and exam, you can then ask to have your teeth professionally whitened. Below are some of the teeth whitening options we offer:
- One hour, in office “laser” whitening – This procedure is ideal for patients who want fast results and are not interested in at-home treatments.
- At-home tray whitening – This procedure involves the patient wearing a custom dental tray for approximately 30 minutes per day, while at home, until desired results occur.
- Crest Professional White Strips – These white strips are 4 times stronger and faster than the store bought brand Crest White Strips.
Keep in mind that teeth whitening results vary from person to person. Before beginning a Boise teeth whitening process, consult with your Boise dentist for a realistic idea of what you can expect to achieve and how long it should take to achieve them. It’s also important to note that over whitening can also cause loss of enamel, or translucent or unnatural looking teeth. A good rule of thumb is that the color of your teeth should match the whites of your eyes.
To ensure the health and beauty of your smile, schedule an appointment at Summit Dental before choosing over-the-counter tooth whiteners. As your #1 Boise dentist, we take pride in the dental services we offer and promise to make the best recommendation based on your individual needs. Call us at (208) 345-8962 today!

Given the popularity of today’s Boise teeth whitening treatments, we would like to provide you with some of the basics when it comes to your Boise teeth whitening options:
Over-the-Counter Boise Teeth Whitening Products
Over-the-counter Boise teeth whitening products can often be purchased at most drugstores and grocery stores. You’ve also probably seen quite a few of them advertised on television as well. These type of Boise teeth whitening products often come in various forms:
- Tray Systems
- Chewing Gums
- Boise teeth whitening strips
What is the effectiveness of these over-the-counter Boise teeth whitening products?
However, the effectiveness of these types of over-the-counter Boise teeth whitening treatments vary. Generally speaking, the tray systems and whitening strips are the most effective options when it comes to any actual teeth whitening results. The least effective are the mouthwashes, toothpastes, and chewing gum.
Professional Boise Teeth Whitening
A professional Boise teeth whitening refers to treatments that are performed in the office, or with professional-grade kits provided by your Boise dentist for a patient’s use at home. Whether in-office or at-home, these treatments are the most effective Boise teeth whitening option available, and are quite popular when it comes to the finishing touches of your personalized best smile restoration.
How effective is a professional Boise teeth whitening?
A professional Boise teeth whitening treatment is an excellent way to remove even the toughest of Boise dental stains. By visiting your Boise dentist, he will be able to brighten your smile several shades in just one single session. By comparison, at-home treatments provided by your Boise dentist can also leave your smile looking just as pristine.
Benefits of Professional Teeth Whitening
A professional Boise teeth whitening provides the following benefits that over-the-counter products simply do not offer:
- Safer treatments.
- Faster Boise teeth whitening results.
- Customized treatment under careful supervision.
Alternatives to Professional Teeth Whitening
Sometimes certain Boise dental stains are extreme or originate from within the tooth rather than topically. In such cases, a Boise teeth whitening may have limited to little effect when it comes to brightening a tooth. In such cases, there are other Boise teeth whitening alternatives when it comes to your best smile restoration. Some of the most popular alternatives to a Boise teeth whitening are:
- Porcelain veneers
- Boise dental bonding
- Boise crowns and bridges

During a consultation with your Boise dentist at Summit Dental, we will be sure to consider your type of tooth discoloration as well as the optimal way in which it can be treated. Teeth Whitening Options
Teeth Whitening Toothpaste – While purchasing a teeth whitening toothpaste may seem like a logical solution when it comes to whitening your teeth, it is however the least effective option. Whitening toothpastes are simply made with mild abrasives that gently polish away shallow surface stains. However, they contain no bleaching agents and are powerless against severe discoloration and stains.
Over-the-Counter Teeth Whitening Products – While many over-the-counter teeth whitening products often claim to whiten your teeth overnight, this simply isn’t the case. In fact, it can take several weeks of daily use to get the results you expect. Whitening trays, gels, and strips don’t have as much bleaching power as a professional Boise dentist teeth whitening treatment. There is also significant risk of tooth and gum irritation due to the excessive amount of time required to get the results you want.
Professional Boise Dentist Teeth Whitening – Your experienced Boise dentist at Summit Dental can whiten your teeth significantly in just one hour, with our in office “laser” Boise dentist teeth whitening treatment. This procedure is ideal for our patients who want fast results without bothering with other at-home treatments.

Hidden Issues Only Your Boise Dentist Can Find
Besides visiting your Boise dentist to prevent any potential Boise dental problems that may arise, another good reason is to check for hidden issues in your mouth that you may not even realize you have. There are a number of things to keep watch out for. Bacteria, tartar, and cavities are often times found in between teeth where they can remain undetected. If left untreated, cavities and decay get worse over time, requiring extensive, and often unwanted treatment that can cost more to have fixed than it would have to prevent. During a routine, Boise dental exam, our team of dentists will not only provide you with a Boise teeth cleaning but will be able to check your fillings and best smile restorations to make sure everything is in good shape.
Preventing problems before they start is essential in maintaining a healthy smile. Many times you can’t see or feel a variety of Boise dental problems until its too late. With proper dental hygiene, everyone can greatly reduce their risk of getting cavities, gingivitis, periodontitis, and other dental problems while reducing the risk of secondary problems caused by poor oral health. This, in turn, can reduce the risk of secondary problems. Schedule regular Boise dental checkups and Boise teeth cleanings today to ensure the overall health of you & your mouth!

How White is Too White?
We see it every day. From movies to magazines, Hollywood conveys smiles whiter than snow. But how white is too white?
A Good Rule of Thumb
According to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry , teeth whitening is the No. 1 requested cosmetic service today. The problem, though, is that many people are taking it too far. Over whitening can cause loss of enamel or translucent and unnatural looking teeth. If taken to the extreme, teeth can lose their healthy sheen. A good rule of thumb is that the color of your teeth should match the whites of your eyes .
What Causes Discoloration?
There are many causes for tooth discoloration. As we age our teeth often become naturally darker, yellow or stained. Some main causes of internal and external tooth discoloration are due to genetics, tooth decay, trauma, antibiotics and certain foods.
Get Teeth Whitening Advice from a Boise Dentist
For your best smile restoration, it’s important to consult with your Boise dentist about your preferred whitening method as they are best qualified to handle any issues that may arise from your whitening treatment. With a Boise teeth cleaning, many external stains can be removed while promoting good oral health. During this process your Boise dentist can go over your expectations while guiding you on what is appropriate concerning your overall Boise dental care plan.
Likewise, tooth whitening may not enhance your smile if you’ve had bonding or tooth-colored fillings placed in your front teeth. The whitener will not affect the color of these materials, and they will not match your newly whitened smile. In these cases, you may want to investigate other Boise cosmetic dentistry options, such as porcelain veneers or dental bonding on other teeth.
With the holidays coming up, many of us are probably hoping for the perfect amount of snow—you know what we mean. The kind where it looks pretty but doesn’t delay our holiday flights. No matter what happens with the weather, however, you can have a white Christmas when you ask your Boise dentist how to get your teeth to look and stay a beautiful, natural white.
There are a couple things you need to know to reach your goal of white teeth by Christmas, however:
1. Start Boise Teeth Whitening Now

If you are using a home-whitening kit, our Boise dentists will recommend that you start the teeth whitening process in the next few days. You’ll notice your teeth getting lighter in just a few days, but a Boise dentist knows that it takes most people anywhere from two to four weeks to get their teeth looking the way they want. And it doesn’t matter whether you are using the Crest prescription strength whitening strips (which we recommend for those who just want their teeth a tiny bit whiter), or if you are using our at-home Boise teeth whitening tray kit (the whitening kit that most of our clients use and love).
2. Know What Stains Teeth
In the middle of whitening and want to speed up the process? Or want to keep your teeth whiter for longer? First, a good Boise dentist would recommend avoiding the foods and substances that stain your teeth. This includes dark-colored soda, coffee, tea, cigarettes, and red wine. Can’t avoid them? Water down the staining affect they’ll have by putting milk in your tea or coffee or by rinsing or brushing your teeth after you consume a staining food.
3. Know that There Is Such a Thing as Too White
A good Boise dentist recommends responsible whitening, which means we don’t want our patients using Boise teeth whitening gels or strips every night for the rest of their lives. Instead, put on the whitening trays or strips every other day for a few weeks, and your teeth should become a natural-looking white. After that, all you might need is a night of teeth whitening every month or so.
If you want the brightest smile this Christmas, pick up a whitening kit today or schedule your quick, in-office whitening treatment. We’d love to make your dreams of a white Christmas come true!
Looking to get your teeth pearly white for the holidays? At-home bleaching kits are becoming increasingly popular. Here’s what one Boise dentist has to say about this teeth whitening option:
What Are Bleaching Trays?
An example of the bleaching solution you put in the trays (Image via Flickr by Whiter Image)
First, bleaching trays come in an at-home kit that you get from your Boise dentist. Teeth whitening this way starts with your Boise dentist making trays designed to perfectly fit your teeth before sending you home with the peroxide for whitening. Simply place a small amount of peroxide around the trays, and sleep with them in for 3-4 nights of the week. Your teeth will slowly brighten up in about 3-4 weeks.
The Benefits of Using Bleaching Trays for Teeth Whitening
That’s the process of using bleach trays. Here are the benefits:
- Affordability. Bleaching trays are kind of the middle ground of teeth whitening—it gives good results, but isn’t too expensive.
- Speed. All things considered, a month for white teeth isn’t asking very much.
- Comfort. Because the trays are specifically made for your mouth, you don’t get as much peroxide on the gums or other areas that could be irritated by, say, regular whitening strips.
The Disadvantages of Using Bleaching Trays for Teeth Whitening
While a good fit for many people, some people might find these problems:
- Teeth sensitivity. If you grind your teeth or just have sensitive teeth, using bleaching trays can be uncomfortable.
- Damage to tooth enamel. Bleaching trays do take away a little from your tooth enamel, so if you grind your teeth or know you are running low on tooth enamel, you may want to consider other options.
- Time. Other types of teeth whitening can be done in an hour, so there is a longer wait than, say, the in-office treatment.
So, should you use bleaching trays? It depends. For most people it is a resounding yes! But if you grind your teeth, have really sensitive teeth, or need them white fast, an in-office treatment is a better way to go.
Have more questions about teeth whitening? Stop in and ask a Boise dentist!
You know you want to get your teeth whitened, and you’ve heard plenty of things that you should and shouldn’t do with the process. Here are four things you should keep in mind:
- Image via Flickr by Kaptain Kobold
1. Do research and ask your dentist in Boise which whitening methods work the best for you.
While you should do your own research, you can also get valuable information by talking with your dentist. Boise dentists at our Summit Dental Office offer three methods of Boise teeth whitening: extra-strength whitening strips, an in-office teeth whitening Boise treatment, and customized whitening trays. The teeth whitening trays offer a great mix of affordability and customized work and is our most popular choice.
2. Don’t wait until the last minute to get teeth whitening in Boise.
Unless you choose an in-office treatment with a Boise dentist, you’ll need at least a few weeks to get to your teeth to the desired whiteness. Give yourself a month with the extra-strength Boise teeth whitening strips or customized trays.
3. Do become extra vigilant with daily dental hygiene.
By brushing your teeth and flossing twice a day, you can keep your teeth the beautiful white you want them to be long after your teeth whitening Boise treatment. You can further keep them white by rinsing your mouth or brushing after eating or drinking anything extra sugary.
4. Don’t drink staining liquids during or right after your Boise teeth whitening treatment.
If you want to see results quickly and want them to last, avoid drinking tea, coffee, soda, and other dark liquids that are more likely to stain teeth. A patient’s teeth are especially vulnerable to staining right after a teeth whitening Boise treatment, so it is especially important to avoid these substances during and soon after the bleaching process, no matter which method you choose. The same goes for smoking or chewing tobacco—it yellows your teeth, so limit use, rinse after using, or (best of all) cut it out completely.
What have you learned from getting your teeth whitened? Let us know!
Christmas and New Year’s usually means plenty of family time, parties, and pictures. Want your teeth to be white and sparkly for the holidays? Here are our tips!
Start Teeth Whitening in Boise Today
We’ve mentioned before that there are three types of teeth whitening. Two of those types are home kits—professional-strength Crest Whitening Strips, and customized whitening trays. The customized trays are our most popular method of whitening because they are affordable and offer quick and impressive results. The results are gradual enough to make the process look natural and to let you decide how white you want your teeth to be. They also allow you to touch up your smile every few months so you can always have a bright smile.
For this at-home teeth whitening, Boise dentists recommend allowing three to four weeks to get to your desired level of brightness. That means you need to start the whitening process this week to be finished by Christmas! You can speed up the process by using the trays or strips once or even twice a day.
Be Vigilant with Brushing and Flossing
Keeping teeth clean is the best thing you can do to keep them white—you can help get a whiter smile by simply brushing and flossing three times a day. Remember that doing a great job brushing your teeth doesn’t mean brushing really hard (which can damage gums and tooth enamel) but brushing for a longer period of time (usually about two minutes).
Getting a new toothbrush can help you keep the best dental care and hygiene as well. A sonic toothbrush will clean your teeth extraordinarily well and can be even more valuable if you are brushing around dental work like braces or a permanent retainer. Some electric or sonic toothbrushes will even time themselves so that you know you are brushing for a good two minutes.
Stay Away from Dark Foods
No matter what type of teeth whitening, Boise dentists highly recommend staying away from coffee, tea, soda, and other dark, staining foods that can diminish your teeth whitening results. This is especially true for the day after a one-appointment teeth whitening, but it still holds true for the at-home kits or any time you want your teeth especially white and pretty. If you can’t go without your morning coffee or afternoon Diet Coke, you can lessen its impact by diluting the color with milk in coffee and by rinsing with water immediately after drinking.
Whatever type of teeth whitening you decide on, these tips will help you get your teeth sparkling for pictures by Christmas.
