Teaching Kids About Boise Dental Health

Teaching Kids About Boise Dental Health

Parents throughout the Treasure Valley have probably tried every type of motivation — reasoning, nagging, threatening, and even bribery — to get their kids to do things that are good for them. This includes eating vegetables, doing their homework, and brushing their teeth.

Boise Dental Care Is Important

Good Boise dental care is about more than a beautiful smile. First and foremost, it contributes to our self-confidence — and what parent doesn’t want their child to feel happy, confident, and proud of themselves?

What you may not realize, however, is that good Boise dental health greatly contributes to their long-term overall health. Poor dental health is directly linked to diseases including diabetes, obesity, and even heart disease. That’s why it’s important to encourage your children to take care of their teeth. Doing so will set them up for a lifetime of good dental and whole-body health.

Focus On The Big Picture By Starting Early

The best way to teach your child about their dental health is to start early. When they are babies, it’s important to wipe their gums with a soft, wet washcloth after feedings. Once their teeth start to come in, make sure to brush them at least twice a day with a soft toothbrush and water.

Around the age of two, a child can start to learn to brush their teeth on their own. However, it’s important that they don’t use fluoride toothpaste until they learn not to swallow it. You can also have them start flossing around the same time. If they haven’t visited their Boise dentist yet, now is the time to make an appointment!

While children don’t have the coordination to brush and floss their teeth like an expert, the key is to teach them by building good Boise dental habits early in life.

Help Them Understand The Basics

  • Brush twice a day
  • Floss every day
  • Avoid sugary foods and drinks
  • Visit their Boise dentist regularly

Make it fun!

What parent hasn’t been able to turn a boring or unpleasant chore into something fun like a game? We all have! Below are a few ideas if you need some inspiration to make it more fun:

  • Use a sand timer to see who can brush their teeth the longest. Whoever wins gets a sticker!

  • Kids like to feel like they have choices — so let them pick out a toothbrush at the store with their favorite character on it or a toothpaste flavor they want to try.

  • Give plenty of praise and rewards — just not candy.

Summit Dental Group

Good oral hygiene at an early age is the foundation for a lifetime of good oral health. That’s why there is no substitute for the time you spend with your children while teaching them the fundamentals of caring for their teeth and gums.

At Summit Dental Group, we are here to help. When you bring your child in for a visit, let us know if there are any concerns or issues you’d like to discuss. We promise to make sure your child’s smile is healthy while providing them with a positive, friendly and age-appropriate dental experience each and every time they come to visit us.

If you would like more information about ways to boost your child’s Boise dental health or to schedule an appointment, contact us at (208) 345-8962 today!

Preventative Boise Dental Education: The Anatomy Of Teeth

Preventative Boise Dental Education: The Anatomy Of Teeth

The health of our teeth and gums are critical to the quality of our lives. But what happens if we don’t take care of them? At Summit Dental Group we believe that preventative care and Boise dental education are extremely important to optimal dental health. That’s why it’s essential to understand the anatomy of our teeth and gums. This way, our patients can see for themselves how every part of their smile is important to their overall health.

The Anatomy Teeth — What Makes Up Your Smile

The Crown

Teeth are made up of two major parts: the crown and the root. As the visual part of a tooth, the crown is what everyone sees when you smile. Resting above the gum line the crown only makes up a third of your actual tooth.

Tooth Roots

Embedded in the gums and jawbone, tooth roots lie beneath the crown. Roots are surrounded by nerve endings and work to stimulate blood flow and keep your jawbone strong.

Tooth Enamel

Tooth enamel is the outermost layer of your tooth. Typically, it’s white and shiny unless it becomes stained over time. When this happens the enamel can become dull and yellow. While it is one of the hardest substances our body produces, it can be worn down as we age due to everyday wear and tear.

The Dentin Layer

Naturally yellow, the dentin layer of a tooth is the bony material that supports the enamel and carries the nerve fibers of a tooth. People with sensitive teeth often feel discomfort because the dentin layer of their teeth are exposed to the substances they put in their mouth.

The Cementum Layer

As the surface layer to the roots, the cementum layer attaches to both your jawbone and gums. Dynamic to your periodontal health, this layer can become inflamed when gingivitis strikes.

The Dental Pulp

Tooth pulp is in the very center of a tooth and contains blood, nerves, and lymph vessels. Centralized the pulp works to circulate blood flow and keep a tooth alive.

Why It’s Important To Care For Your Smile

It’s now a well-accepted fact that there is a direct link between your Boise dental health and your overall health. In fact, most studies suggest that the bacteria and inflammation that causes gum disease also contributes to other major health issues like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, etc.

Even worse, many dental issues like periodontal (gum) disease or tooth decay won’t cause any pain until they’re in an advanced stage which often requires a complex treatment plan. That’s why maintaining your oral health is an important step to protecting your overall health.

Reasons Not To Be Nervous About Boise Dental Implants

Reasons Not To Be Nervous About Boise Dental Implants

Over the years, Boise dental implants have gained popularity for their life-like appearance and longevity. These qualities are attributed to a titanium post embedded in the jawbone. Because titanium acts like a natural affinity to bone, new cells grow and adhere to the dental implant over time, making a strong, durable connection.

Of course, dental implants require implant surgery — a prospect many people get nervous about when choosing this replacement option. However, implant surgery is a routine treatment that causes very little discomfort in the trained hands of your Boise dentist with a very high success rate.

That’s why we’d like to provide you with the following reasons Boise dental implants are nothing to be nervous about:

Treatment Is Precisely Planned

Dental implant surgery is a relatively minor procedure. Your Boise dentist will map out all the placement details ahead of time. For complex situations, an X-ray or CT image will be used as a surgical guide to determine the exact location for each implant before an incision is made to create a small channel to hold the implant.

Treatment Can Be Performed With Local Anesthesia

Dental implants are usually easier to undergo than a tooth extraction. As long as you’re healthy enough for that procedure, you shouldn’t have any problem with implant surgery. Using a local anesthetic, your Boise dentist will numb the implant area and surrounding tissues while you remain conscious. If, however, you have any anxiety, our dentists can provide you with a sedative or anti-anxiety medication before the procedure.

There’s Minimal Discomfort Afterward

Thanks to advanced implant techniques and a pre-planned surgical guide there will be very little tissue disruption. Incised tissues will be stitched normally with self-absorbing sutures. In most cases, a mild anti-inflammatory drug such as ibuprofen will be used to relieve discomfort unless a stronger pain reliever is needed.

Keep in mind that dental implants heal fairly quickly with a very high success rate. After a few weeks, your Boise dentist will attach a permanent crown to the titanium post. Once in place, you’ll have a fully functional and confident smile to last a lifetime.

If you are missing one or more teeth and would like to speak to a Boise dentist about dental implants, contact Summit Dental Group today at (208) 345-8962. We would be more than happy to evaluate your dental health, answer any questions you may have, and discuss your available treatment options.

Boise Dentist: How To Fix A Chipped Tooth

Boise Dentist: How To Fix A Chipped Tooth

Most people throughout the Treasure Valley will chip a tooth at some point in their lives. Constant wear in a particular spot can also weaken the enamel until it breaks off. You can also bite down hard on food or accidentally chip your tooth during normal daily activities. Whatever the case may be, the Boise dentists at Summit Dental offer a variety of servicers to repair chipped teeth so you can show off your smile with confidence.

Boise Dental Bonding

Treatment options vary depending on the extent of damage or whether a chip is visible when you smile. If the chip is small or located on the front of a tooth, dental bonding is an option to repair the damage in a single office visit.

Also known as a “filling”, dental bonding fills the missing enamel with tooth-like composite resin. During this process, the chipped area is gently etched so that the bonding material will adhere. Then an adhesive material is applied before a composite resin is shaped to blend with the natural tooth and restore its shape and color. An ultraviolet light is then used to harden the material.

Boise Dental Crowns

Larger chips or teeth with significant decay may require a crown. A Boise dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that covers the remaining tooth. As a long-lasting option, crowns are composed of metal, porcelain, resin or ceramic. Your Boise dentist will help you determine the best choice to meet your needs. Once a crown is cemented into place, your teeth will look and function just like they did before.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are another great option for repairing chips. Veneers are thin porcelain shells that cover the front of the teeth. A single veneer can be used or multiple for a total best smile restoration. Veneers can also be used to disguise gaps, crooked or stained teeth and improve your bite. During your Boise dental office visit, the surface layer of your tooth is removed to make room for the veneer. The veneer is then color-matched to your teeth and cemented into place with an ultraviolet light.

Summit Dental Group

If you have a broken or chipped tooth, schedule an appointment with Summit Dental. We can quickly restore the function and beauty of your smile in as little as one office visit. Contact us at (208) 345-8962 or visit us at 782 Americana Blvd in Boise for more information.

Boise Dental Tips for Seniors

Boise Dental Tips for Seniors

As we get older, it’s easy to think that parts of our bodies will simply “wear out”. This is especially true when it comes to our teeth. However, nothing can be farther from the truth. By taking care of your teeth and gums, you can maintain a healthy mouth well into your senior years. Not only will you be able to eat delicious foods and smile confidently, you’ll set your body up for better overall health. That’s why the Boise dentists at Summit Dental Group would like to provide you with the following dental tips for seniors.

Brush and Floss Often

First and foremost, it’s important to brush and floss at least twice a day. However, as you age, your teeth and gums require a little extra time and attention. After the age of 50, plaque can build up quickly and be more difficult to get rid of. That’s why you may want to start brushing your teeth after every meal. You should also brush your teeth when you wake up and before you go to bed.

Be Gentle on Your Gums

Healthy gums are an important part of a healthy body, regardless of your age. But it’s important to be gentle on your gums when taking care of them. Gum recession can cause the root surfaces of your teeth to become exposed. This can increase sensitivity and make them more susceptible to decay. That’s why you should always use a soft-bristle toothbrush when you brush.

Clean Dentures Daily

Just like your teeth, dentures need to be cleaned daily. Cleaning your dentures will remove food particles and dental plaque while preventing stains. However, they cannot be cleaned with normal toothpaste. Toothpaste is abrasive and can damage dentures. That’s why you should always use a product specifically designed for dentures.

Watch for Side Effects of Medications

Many medications come with side effects that affect the mouth. One of the most common issues is dry mouth. Dry mouth cannot only accelerate tooth decay but cause gum disease as well. Without saliva to wash away plaque and neutralize acids, it’s important to keep an eye out for any changes to your teeth or gums. Always contact your Boise dentist if you notice any changes.

Drink Lots of Water

Drinking lots of water comes with numerous health benefits. Especially for your teeth and gums. Water helps rinse away and dilute acids produced by sugars and bacteria in your mouth. This, in turn, will help prevent cavities and tooth decay while making it easier for you to swallow.

Visit Your Boise Dentist Regularly

As you age, the nerves inside your mouth become less sensitive. That means you may have dental issues without even realizing it. Seeing your Boise dentist for regular cleanings and oral exams is important for maintaining your oral health into your senior years. Make sure to schedule an appointment at Summit Dental every six months or more frequently if you’re experiencing regular dental issues.

While many people throughout the Treasure Valley make resolutions that range from brushing their teeth to completing best smile restorations it’s important to understand the benefits they provide. Whatever your goals may be, keep in mind that consistency is key to any resolution you make.

By visiting your downtown Boise dentist every six months you will not only catch problems sooner it will make them less expensive and painful to treat.

Maintain A Healthy Diet

Maintaining a healthy diet isn’t just a New Year’s resolution that’s good for your overall health. By cutting down on sweets and sugary beverages, you can prevent unwanted dental problems and tooth decay in the process. To improve your diet, start by drinking plenty of water and replacing sugary treats with fresh fruits and vegetables. Not only will your waistline thank you, your teeth and gums will as well.

Quit Tobacco

Whether you smoke or chew, now is a great time to finally kick the habit. Tobacco use isn’t just bad for your overall health, it’s bad for your teeth and gums as well. People who use tobacco double their risk of developing gum disease and increase the chances of tooth discoloration, cavities, tooth loss and gum recession along with throat, lung and oral cancer.

Boise Dentist: What Are Crowns and Bridges?

Boise Dentist: What Are Crowns and Bridges?

Do you have damaged or missing teeth? If so, there are a variety of treatment options available. Two of the most common options the Boise dentists at Summit Dental use are crowns and bridges. To provide you with more information about these best smile restorations we’ve put together the following information to help you determine which option may be right for you.

What Are Boise Dental Crowns?

A dental crown is a best smile restoration that your downtown Boise dentist uses to repair a tooth. Dental crowns are used to cover a tooth that has a large cavity, root canal therapy or has been broken. Like a cap, a dental crown fits over a tooth and is bonded in place to provide structure and protection while maintaining its natural appearance. Dental crowns are also used with dental bridges and implants to replace one or more missing teeth.

Boise Dental Crown Advantages

Boise dental crowns provide structure, stability, and strength for broken, missing or badly damaged teeth. They also add a layer of protection to prevent worn or cracked teeth from getting worse. As an added bonus dental crowns improve a tooth’s overall function and appearance in the process.

What Are Boise Dental Bridges?

A dental bridge is a best smile restoration you’re downtown Boise dentist uses to replace missing teeth. Unlike dental implants, a bridge utilizes the surrounding teeth to bridge the gap when a single tooth or multiple teeth are missing. This dental option typically uses two crowns, one on each tooth (abutment teeth) on either side of a gap with false teeth made of alloy, gold, or porcelain placed in between.

Boise Dental Bridge Advantages

As an affordable solution compared to dental implants, bridges are also used to replace teeth in patients who don’t have strong or sturdy jaw bone or in patients not healthy enough for surgery. Typically they only require one or two Boise dental office visits and are just as other durable as other best smile restoration options.

Summit Dental

Both dental crowns and bridges are used by Summit Dental to restore the look and integrity of a patient’s teeth. Maintaining good dental health and visiting your Boise dentist regularly will also ensure your crowns and bridges last. With appropriate care, these best smile restorations can provide you with strong, beautiful smile for many years.

If you are considering options for replacing missing teeth, contact us at (208) 345-8962 to schedule an appointment. Our Boise dentists will help discuss your options so that you can make an informed decision that best suits your individual needs.
