Six Boise Dental Myths Busted!

Six Boise Dental Myths Busted!

Throughout history, there have been some pretty crazy misconceptions when it comes to dental health and dentistry. While many of these myths have been dispelled over time as silly superstitions, there are, however, many Boise dental myths that persist. That’s why the Boise dentists at Summit Dental Group would like to separate fact from fiction in today’s blog by taking a look at six of the most enduring modern dental myths.

My teeth look and feel fine. I don’t need to see my Boise dentist.

Not only can looks be deceiving, you may not feel any pain from an undiagnosed problem until it’s too late. That’s why it’s important to visit your downtown Boise dentist at least twice a year for bi-annual checkups and cleanings. Oral health issues such as tooth decay and gum disease can develop slowly and catching them early can help prevent them from turning into expensive, painful problems down the road.

My parents never had any major dental problems. Neither will I.

While genetics do play a small role in determining how healthy your teeth will be, it really all depends on how well you care for your teeth as you age. The best way to prevent problems from developing is to brush and floss your teeth regularly and visit your downtown Boise dentist regularly.

Brushing my teeth can hurt my enamel.

Unfortunately, it is possible to damage your enamel if you use a hard bristled toothbrush. However, worse problems can occur if you don’t brush and floss your teeth regularly. That’s why it’s important to use a soft bristled toothbrush to gently clean your teeth, mouth, and gums at least twice a day. Doing so will NOT harm your enamel in any way.

Chewing gum is a good substitute for brushing my teeth.

While chewing sugar-free gum between meals is a helpful way to freshen your breath and increase the production of saliva, it’s no substitute for brushing your teeth. In order to remove harmful plaque and debris, brushing is an important part of keeping your teeth and gums healthy.

Dental procedures are unsafe during pregnancy.

Taking care of your teeth and gums is especially important during pregnancy. Changes in hormone levels can cause inflammation of the gums which can lead to gingivitis. In fact, studies have shown a direct link between gum disease and preterm, and low-birth-weight babies. Symptoms of gingivitis include red, swollen, tender gums that are prone to bleeding. That’s why it’s important to visit your downtown Boise dentist for regular checkups when you are expecting.

Baby teeth don’t need much care.

Unfortunately, many people believe this common dental misconception. However, baby teeth play an important role in how your child’s permanent teeth will develop. Neglecting to take proper care of them can cause unwanted problems with their overall health and future teeth. As your child grows it’s especially important to teach them good oral hygiene habits as these habits will stick with him or her over the course of their life.

Boise Dental Tips: Is It Time to Replace Your Toothbrush?

Boise Dental Tips: Is It Time to Replace Your Toothbrush?

Your toothbrush plays an important role in your Boise dental health and hygiene. However, did you know that your toothbrush is also the perfect breeding ground for germs, bacteria and even fungus? Yuck!

According to the American Dental Association, an illness such as the cold or flu can be extended by the reintroduction of germs through your toothbrush. This can be especially dangerous to those who suffer from a chronic illness or a low immune system. Even worse, the bacteria and germs from a toothbrush can cause an unwanted infection, causing serious health issues if you experience trauma to your gum tissues.

To avoid problems such as these while keeping your teeth and gums healthy, it’s important to keep your toothbrush clean and replace it every 3-4 months. Sterilizing your toothbrush will not only reduce a number of harmful microorganisms, it will also reduce the chance of extending and contracting unnecessary illnesses.

Simple methods for keeping your toothbrush clean:

  • Wash your hands with soap and water before brushing your teeth.

  • Rinse your toothbrush thoroughly with clean water after brushing.

  • Store your toothbrush away from the toilet where it can air-dry between uses.

  • Store multiple toothbrushes in separate containers where they don’t touch each other.

  • Do not store your toothbrush in a drawer, cabinet or toothbrush protector. Doing so will promote the growth of unwanted bacteria.

  • Check your toothbrush for signs of wear and tear and replace it sooner than 3-4 months if the bristles begin to fray.

Additionally, in order to properly sanitize your toothbrush (especially after an illness) is to dilute hydrogen peroxide in water and place your toothbrush head inside the solution for 10-15 minutes. Make sure to rinse the toothbrush thoroughly with water afterward and store it in an upright container to air-dry.

What’s So Special About Toothpaste?

What’s So Special About Toothpaste?

One of the easiest ways to maintain good oral health is to brush and floss your teeth at least twice a day and to visit your downtown Boise dentist for routine cleanings and exams. But have you ever wondered what toothpaste is made of and how it works? Not only does toothpaste freshen your breath and leave your mouth feeling clean it is one of best lines of defense when it comes to preventing tooth decay.

How Toothpaste Works

Abrasives
Toothpaste is made up of mild abrasives that help combat the growth of bacteria while preventing the buildup of plaque. When you brush with toothpaste, the abrasives work to remove microorganisms and leftover food particles while polishing the surface areas of your teeth. Many toothpaste brands also contain ingredients like triclosan and Xylitol that go the extra mile to prevent the growth of plaque-producing bacteria. Not only does plaque cause tooth decay it can also lead to more dangerous Boise dental issues like periodontal disease.

Fluoride
Fluoride is another key ingredient found in toothpaste. As the bacteria inside your mouth feeds off of leftover food particles, it leaves behind an acidic byproduct that causes tooth decay. This is a fancy way of saying that the acid on your teeth causes cavities. Fluoride works to not only strengthen your teeth but reduce the growth of bacteria and acid-related damage.

Flavoring and Sweetening Agents
With a variety of brands to choose from, toothpaste comes in an assortment of different flavors. While flavoring doesn’t do much to fight bacteria or the buildup of plaque, it does, however, provide it with an appealing flavor. This, in turn, helps increase the odds of a person brushing their teeth 2-3 times a day.

Summit Dental Group

Many adults think that brushing and flossing their teeth is the best way to maintain good Boise dental health. However, it’s impossible to have a healthy mouth if that’s all you do. While brushing is important, it doesn’t remove everything that gets left behind. That’s why it’s important to visit your downtown Boise dentist for regular teeth cleanings and exams.

If it’s been awhile since your last Boise teeth cleaning, don’t delay. Give Summit Dental a call at (208) 345-8962 to set up an appointment!

Boise Dental Care During Pregnancy

Boise Dental Care During Pregnancy

Good oral health is an important part of staying physically healthy. Even more, it is especially important during pregnancy. Not only does good oral health protect a mother, it also protects an unborn child as well. Unfortunately, however, many expectant mothers put off routine Boise dental visits due to the fear that it is unsafe. However, nothing could be further from the truth.

Boise Dental Health & Pregnancy

As your body changes during pregnancy so does your oral health. While scientists don’t understand all the reasons for this change, they do know that pregnancy can make your mouth more susceptible to gingivitis or periodontal disease. Hormonal changes can also create a more favorable environment for bacteria to grow causing tooth decay while you are pregnant.

Is Routine Boise Dental Work Safe during Pregnancy?

Yes. General care that includes regular dental exams or a professional teeth cleaning are safe for expectant mothers. On the other hand, when it comes to restorative Boise dental work such as crowns and bridges or root canal therapy, your Boise dentist may recommend a treatment plan to prevent a condition from progressing.

Are Boise Dental X-rays Safe During Pregnancy?

While X-rays are considered generally safe, your Boise dentist may recommend postponing any annual exam X-rays until after the birth of your baby. If an X-ray is required in the case of an emergency, the American College of Radiology reports that a single diagnostic X-ray does not have enough radiation to harm a developing fetus. If by chance you do need an X-ray during your pregnancy, every precaution will be made to maintain the health of you and your baby during your Boise dental visit.

Making Your Boise Dental Visit More Comfortable

  • Be sure to inform your Boise dentist & hygienist that you are pregnant.
  • Delay any elective procedures until after your baby is born.
  • Postpone all non-emergency procedures until your 2nd trimester or after the birth of the baby.
  • Uncross your legs while sitting in the Boise dentist chair for optimal circulation.

Summit Dental Group

If you have any questions related to your dental health before, during or after pregnacy stop by our office or give us a call at (208) 345-8962 today. Don’t Wait Until It Hurts To Visit Your Boise Dentist

Don’t Wait Until It Hurts To Visit Your Boise Dentist

Patients throughout the Treasure Valley often don’t visit their downtown Boise dentist until something chips, breaks, or hurts. However, waiting until something hurts is a terrible idea because it often results in expensive repairs that could have been prevented.

Even worse, many dental issues like periodontal (gum) disease or tooth decay won’t cause any pain until they’re in an advanced stage which often requires a complex treatment plan. By being proactive about your preventative care appointments, the Boise dentists at Summit Dental Group can detect and prevent many issues with less invasive treatment options.

Dental Health Affects Your Overall Health

It’s now a well-accepted fact that there is a direct link between your Boise dental health and your overall health. In fact, most studies suggest that the bacteria and inflammation that causes gum disease also contributes to other major health issues like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, etc. That’s why maintaining your oral health is an important step to protecting your overall health.

The Importance Of Preventative Care

Preventative dental care is the same as any other kind of preventative medicine. By taking care of minor problems ahead of time, you will avoid bigger, much more expensive and painful problems down the road. Even better? The dentists at Summit Dental Group are here to help with all your Boise dental needs to prevent unwanted problems.

Our preventative dentistry services include:

  • Comprehensive patient exams
  • Boise dental X-rays
  • Boise teeth cleanings
  • Patient education
  • Fluoride treatments
  • Injury protection
  • Routine dental visits

Benefits of Preventative Dental Care

Keeping your teeth and gums healthy isn’t the only reason you should maintain preventative Boise dental care. Below are some additional benefits to think about.

Save Time & Money – Routine dental exams and Boise teeth cleanings are relatively cheaper compared to the cost of major dental procedures. By investing in preventative dental care, you will not only save money but time spent in the dentist’s chair for major corrective procedures.

Avoid the Dentist – Don’t like going to the dentist? By maintaining your preventative dental care appointments, you will only have to visit our office twice a year while avoiding things like drills, shots, and pain.

Avoid Secondary Problems – Boise dental problems often get worse before they get better, especially when left untreated. By maintaining preventative dental care, you will not only keep your teeth and gums healthy, you will avoid minor problems that can turn into major problems down the road.

As a practice, Summit Dental Group believes that preventative care and education are extremely important to optimal dental health. 4th Of July Boise Dental Tips

4th Of July Boise Dental Tips

Happy 4th of July from everyone at Summit Dental Group! As we celebrate our nation’s freedom with parades, picnics, BBQ’s, and fireworks, it’s important to remember not to cut it short when it comes to maintaining good oral health. That’s why we’ve put together the following list of Boise dental tips to keep your smile as bright as the fireworks while keeping your celebrations as joyful as possible.

Eat Healthy Foods

While can be tempting to indulge in chips and other salty snacks, it’s important to choose options that are not only healthy but taste good as well. Make sure to load up on fruits and veggies and eat calcium-rich foods like yogurt and cheese to help maintain good oral health while keeping unwanted calories at bay.

Drink Water

4th of July celebrations mean plenty of time outdoors. To help beat the heat, make sure to drink plenty of water instead of sodas and sports drinks to keep you hydrated. Drinking water also helps to rinse away leftover food particles that stick to teeth while preventing acid buildup and the growth of bacteria in the process.

Chew Sugarless Gum

Like any other holiday, daylong snacking is a common theme during Independence Day celebrations. To help keep your teeth healthy and clean, make sure to chew some sugarless gum to help remove leftover food particles and stimulate saliva production.

Don’t Use Your Teeth As Tools

This may sound like common sense but it happens more than you think. When people lack the proper tools, they often resort to using their teeth to open packages or even drinks. Unless it involves chewing food, you should never, EVER use your teeth as tools.

After The Celebration

Once the 4th of July celebrations have passed, make sure to visit your downtown Boise dentist at Summit Dental Group. We can help make sure your smile is as healthy as possible with a post-holiday appointment. Call us at (208) 345-8962 today!

Wishing Everyone A Safe, Happy, And Healthy Independence Day!!!

Preventing Tooth Decay With Boise Dental Sealants

Preventing Tooth Decay With Boise Dental Sealants

As parents, you’ve probably heard about Boise dental sealants but you may be unfamiliar with some of the small, yet important details that go into them. That’s why at Summit Dental Group, we’d like to give you the low-down and provide you with the important facts you need to know to help protect your child from cavities and tooth decay.

What Are Boise Dental Sealant?

Boise dental sealants are a thin coating applied to the grooves of your child’s back teeth to help prevent the penetration of bacteria, sugar, germs and other cavity-causing substances. At Summit Dental Group, our Boise dentists will apply what looks like a thin layer of white nail polish on the chewing surfaces of your child’s teeth. Sealants specifically protect the chewing surfaces of the teeth where cavities commonly start.

How Are They Applied?

Sealants are quick, easy and painless. There is no numbing or drilling required. Once your child’s teeth are cleaned and dried by a hygienist, an adhesive layer is painted onto the teeth followed by the sealant which resembles white or clear nail polish. Only a small amount is needed  to cover the grooves of the teeth. Once the sealant has been applied, your Boise dentist will harden it using a special LED light.

How Do Sealants Last?

When applied correctly, Boise dental sealants can last up to 10 years! While it’s not uncommon for sealants to chip away over time with regular wear and tear, most sealants will last for a number of years to protect your child from unwanted cavities and tooth decay. During every checkup, your Boise dentist will take the time to evaluate the integrity of the sealant and offer to re-apply it as needed.

Our Take On Sealants

Sealants are a wonderful way to protect your child’s teeth. As an added benefit, sealants far outweigh the burden of having to get a filling. All in all, sealants are an excellent way to save you time, money and the stress of having to make unwanted Boise dental appointments for costly treatments. They are easy and quick to apply and can be done at your next checkup appointment without any extra tips to our office. Call us today at (208) 345- 8962 to set up your child’s next checkup and see if your child needs sealants!
